maybe a white blotched heterocampa, Heterocampa umbrata? from David L. Wagner’s amazing book Caterpillars of Eastern Noth America..
You’re absolutely right! I just looked in his book and, although the blotching on the one we saw was more tan than white, the caterpillar in question was a white-blotched heterocampa. Many thanks!
