David’s lifelong observation of turtles and wetland environments as an artist, writer and naturalist has brought him worldwide respect, a John Burroughs medal for distinguished natural-history writing, and a McArthur fellowship—a so-called genuis grant. Most important, his efforts have helped us understand and learn how to protect turtles, the amazing creatures whose habitats humans continue to destroy.
